Ok so HOW do i go about understanding who my facebook fans are? We are a small business steadily acquiring followers but is there a tool to get this kind of data?

Well, the Insights information is going to be most helpful. Gender and age will give you a better sense of who is most inclined to interact with your page and content. This is a good starting place if you are just starting: http://www.practicalecommerce.com/articles/3103-Understanding-Facebook-s-New-Insights-Analytics. Even this very basic data can guide you in what content to share via your page. Also, going back and seeing your fans individually can give you a better sense. However, FB makes it a little harder to see who likes your page these days. Here is a post on how to find that feature http://just-ask-kim.com/how-to-find-out-who-likes-your-facebook-page/. Just go through your fans and see who they are. There is no easy or automated way to do this, but it is worth an hour or two of your time to see if your online fans reflect your real life customers. Then tailor your interactions to better meet your virtual customers. Does that make sense? Is that helpful to get started? Please ask any follow up questions.

Thanks Steve, I read both articles and now realise i have tripped over some of that data and immediately left it in the too hard basket. Having been a late starter into social myself I havent paid much attention for the business either. However I have read enough good information recently that i really want to be maximising the impact of this channel. I will try and connect with a range of customers over the next week. Thankyou for the advice.
