During the Silicon Valley Brand Forum Rod Swanson shared a story that affected him on a personal level, but also gave him insight to understanding the human side of the branding process. I’ll let him tell you his story.
This video was shot at the Silicon Valley Brand Forum’s “Brand Implementation Across All Touchpoints” event in April 2011. The event host was Applied Materials, and it was sponsored by Siegel+Gale and Jolt Social Media.

Great, simple (hey, it was a Seigel+Gale event, right?) video. To me, it illustrates how the general concept of and approach to branding needs a rethink. Good branding has supposedly always been about what’s in it for the consumer.. this video nicely illustrates that it can no longer just be about the consumer, but must actually be “with” the consumer, just as Rod Swanson got in line with the homeless he sought to serve. Like social media (at its best) branding should shift focus from whether its Business-to-Business or Business-to-Consumer and decide to be People-to-People. A good post to wrap up the year, thanks.
